Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opening batter Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements made by captain Ben Stokes regarding the dressing room not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made those words in multiple interviews following England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series versus Australia earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where the visitors now face a series loss with a match to spare, Stokes stated he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" among the squad.

"I've done the necessary discussions over the past two days that I required," said the England leader.

However, after the opener made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the press with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "weak men" comment subsequent to England were beaten in Brisbane to go two matches behind.

The team afterwards took a break to Noosa in the gap between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to this match, he revealed his players had held "honest" talks and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain alive in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from Stokes and head coach McCullum had remained in line with their prior three years in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," said the opener. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

The Hosts Close of Historic Series Victory

The opener's dismissal on day four came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Brook and Stokes himself – left the chasing side 207-6 in pursuit of a daunting target of 435.

Consequently, Australia require four wickets on Sunday's last day to move to an insurmountable 3-0 advantage with three matches played.

A loss would prolong the English team's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes series loss.

This series will be completed in only eleven days of play – with England fell the initial matches in rapid time respectively.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed a series win in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," admitted the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel at this point."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. They're a very, very good team. It was inevitably hard touring here against them. They entered as the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place In Question

Although Crawley's performance in the third Test probably answers questions about his short-term future in the side, Pope appears under threat for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 in the team's second knock on Saturday, adding to his modest returns versus Australia.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a half-century and averages 17.62.

Only one other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

However, the opener said any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "the media" – referring to the press – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," added Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is noise externally. There's no chat of that nature regarding Pope in the camp," he finished.
