Nepal's Political Scene Sees Significant Partnership Forged By Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable move ahead of next year's national polls, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Address Youth Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the grievances raised by the new generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which led to significant loss of life.

"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was signed.

The September revolt was triggered by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from years of slow growth and persistent allegations of systemic graft in politics.

Details of the New Political Agreement

According to the official pact, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the country's established political leadership. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in setting up the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.

Wider Political Discussions Underway

In a separate event, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with a number of leading political figures. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the first such dialogue since the time of the protests.

Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a shared responsibility. The message reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and open environment for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
