Jair Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.
The ex-president was convicted of planning a government overthrow in last fall and sentenced more than over two decades in incarceration, but he continued under house arrest pending appeals.
Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a preventative measure after recent developments were revealed.
This encompassed trying to remove his ankle monitor and a summons to a demonstration that could facilitate a chance to flee".
Judicial Records Show Flight Fears
In a filing authorising the custody, the judge said data from the unit overseeing his home detention suggested the former leader's "intention to break the electronic ankle bracelet to secure accomplishment in his getaway".
This, it said, would be made easier by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his son.
His child, Flávio, who works as a legislator, called for a gathering of his followers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday evening.
Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on social media on the previous day: Will you battle for your country, or observe everything from your phone there on your couch? I call on you to fight with us."
He said the vigil would be so followers could seek divine intervention for his well-being and for the restoration of democratic rule in our land."
Foreign Shelter Risks
Part of the magistrate's decision was the potential of Bolsonaro's move to foreign missions near the residence, considering that the inquiries revealed a background of planning to ask for protection through a embassy office", a declaration said.
The legal document highlights that the American diplomatic mission in the capital, Brasilia, is situated around approximately 13 kilometers from the former president's residence.
Global Responses
The former president's legal troubles have drawn the ire of fellow populist conservative American leader President Trump, leading him to implement a fifty percent tax on goods coming from Brazil.
Bolsonaro is being held in a Federal Police station in the capital and will experience a imprisonment assessment on the following day.
Recent Judicial Appeals
It was only on the previous day that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the High Court to authorize him to complete his entire prison term under home confinement, with digital surveillance.
They also requested that he be authorized to leave his home for medical treatment, saying he needed frequent medical attention for lung conditions and other illnesses.
Background on Conviction
The former president was convicted of heading a conspiracy aimed at keeping him in power after he was defeated in the presidential race to his left-wing rival, Lula.
Top judicial officials said that he was aware of a plan which involved plans to kill Lula and his VP candidate, Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Alexandre de Moraes - the High Court judge who has been presiding over Bolsonaro's trial.
The scheme was thwarted because it couldn't obtain the support of the army and air force commanders. Lula was inaugurated without incident on 1 January 2023.
But a seven days after, on the eighth of January, thousands of Bolsonaro supporters stormed and vandalised public facilities in the capital, Brazil's capital.
The police intervened and around fifteen hundred individuals were arrested.
The magistrates found that the protesters had been encouraged by the former president whose plan, they said, was for the national armed forces to take action, restore order and reinstate his authority.
At the time, the legal team called the decades-long sentence extremely harsh.
He was also barred from seeking elected position until twenty-sixty - a decade minus two years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.
The ex-leader called the trial a "witch hunt and said it was intended to stop him participating in the next presidential race.
