Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for hours when multiple of them drifted across the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend passed through the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and close to the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why criminals use a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and participants so that these practices become not financially viable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
Regional Security Context
The recent incidents occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
